About the programme

For African climate businesses

The Climate Champion Competition, by Startup Discovery Africa (SDA), empowers African entrepreneurs driving climate innovation by identifying, supporting, and celebrating solutions tackling climate change and sustainability. The inaugural pitch competition, held on August 10, 2024 at Academic City University College in Ghana, was hosted in collaboration with Sahara Impact Ventures, the Autodesk Foundation, and Academic City University College, bringing together startups with climate-focused innovations to compete for a US$3,000 grand prize. Open to African-based ventures with an MVP or product ready for iteration, the competition sought solutions aligned with one or more UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on clean energy access, sustainable agriculture, water and sanitation, electric mobility, climate-smart manufacturing, and digital solutions for climate resilience.

Programme feedback

In this world for you to believe in your idea is normal but for someone else to also believe and invest in your idea it takes a next level of courage. We really appreciate Startup Discovery School for this and we are sure to put a lot of energy to bring the best version of Farmercy Technologies

Gabriel Arhin | Farmercy Technologies

As a Ghanaian, Climate change means food insecurity. Currently the impact of Climate Change hits us really hard especially where I come from which has affected harvesting our crops especially maize. Having a platform to share our solution gives me the hope that I am contributing to solving the problem.

Ghana Diapi | Runner up II Climate Champion competition.

My name is Rejoice and I am the founder of E-Rider Courier Services. Climate change is really important to me because I am an asthmatic patient and excessive carbon emissions affect my health. To me, it is very important that we make available electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions in the environment.

I believe climate change has affected us in so many ways. As a software engineer, I am working with my team to develop my CleanApp to help people manage wastes properly by connecting households with waste collectors. I am happy that Startup Discovery School gave us the platform to share our solution.”
